Jewell Chappell Boyd

July 11, 1932 - October 16, 2026

Mrs. Violet Jewell Chappell Boyd of Ararat and Roanoke, Virginia, 94, left this earth to join her loved ones in heaven October 16, 2026. She is the daughter of Columbus Franklin Chappell and Lillie Mae Edwards Chappell, Cana, Virginia. She was born at home on July 11, 1932. She was predeceased by her parents Frank and Lillie; her husband of 59 years, Clifford Boyd; brothers, Ed, Cecil, Jan, Alon and Jack Chappell; grandson, Lee Elliott; and beloved pup Tipper. She is survived by her daughters, Cheryl Boyd of Mt Airy, NC, and Sandi Boyd, Roanoke, VA; and her son, Cliff Boyd and wife Rebecca Boyd, of Eugene, OR; grandchildren, Christina Lazenby (Brad), Andrew Boyd and Archer Boyd-McCauley (Will). Great grandchildren, Charlotte and Graham Lazenby. She was an Air Force wife for 25 years living in Louisiana, Newfoundland, Georgia, Massachusetts, Guam, and Nebraska before settling back into Ararat, Virginia. Jewell began her early career as an administrative assistant in Texas. After having children, she became a homemaker and was involved in the children’s activities such as girl scouts, baseball, and basketball. Her special hobby was reef roaming (aka, shelling) when they lived in Guam, and they amassed a beautiful collection of shells including poisonous ones. She was an expert seamstress and sewed clothes for herself and her children (and our Barbie dolls). She loved to read, was an avid SVU watcher and loved watching VT football. Growing up as a child in the Depression, she was the queen of frugality saving anything that could be used again or repurposed. She and Clifford raised gardens throughout their marriage and canned/froze all that they grew. At one point she also milked our dairy cow, Daisy, to provide milk and butter for her family. Jewell will be remembered as a caring, friendly, and nurturing mother and friend. Her caregivers at Woodland Hills used to argue over who got to take care of her calling her “their sweetie and girl.” She adored her children and grandchildren and was then thrilled to become a great Granny spending time with Charlee and Graham. The family wishes to thank her special caregiver, Laura Tiller Good, Samaritan Hospice especially Kelli, and the Woodland Hills Staff. Family visitation will occur 5pm-7pm on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at Moody Funeral Home, Mt Airy, NC. Additionally, visitation will occur 1hr prior to the service on Wednesday. Service will be held on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at 1:00pm in the chapel at Moody Funeral Home, Mt Airy, NC. A graveside service will immediately follow at Mt. Bethel Moravian Church Cemetery in Cana, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Diabetes Association or to St. Jude Children’s Research.
