Joan Mowles Lilly
Joan Mowles Lilly, 87, of Salem, Virginia, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2025. Born on March 14, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Oscar and Glenna Mae Mowles. Joan was also predeceased by her sister Betty Jane Winstead, brother Ronald Mowles, son David Journell, and granddaughter Melissa Wertz. Joan is survived by her loving daughters Tina Journell (Melanie) and Debra Wimmer (Mark), as well as her daughter-in-law Kim Journell (David). She was a proud grandmother to Billy Journell (Patricia), Timothy Neighbors (Nathan), Emily Journell (Justin), Leslie James (Alex), and a cherished great-grandmother to Alexis, Allison, Preston, Emma, Amaya, Liam and Natalie. Joan also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Joan was deeply devoted to her family and will be remembered as "the fun grandma," always bringing joy with her playful spirit, giggles, and zest for life. She loved to travel and embraced adventure with enthusiasm—whether white-water rafting, snorkeling, riding Disney attractions, or even parasailing, she was all in. Her love of singing and dancing brought happiness to those around her. Joan’s grandchildren also have fond memories of her insightful parental guidance when requested. Professionally, Joan worked for Aramark in various locations but found her greatest fulfillment caring for babies at Honeytree. Her nurturing nature left a lasting impact on all who knew her.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 16, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel located at 305 Roanoke Boulevard in Salem, Va. 24153, where a Celebration of Life service will be held at 2 p.m., following the visitation. The interment will be held in the Abbey at Sherwood Memorial Park, 1250 E. Main St, Salem, VA on Monday, February 17, at 12:30 p.m.
