John Edward Turner
John Edward Turner, 85, of Martinsville, VA passed away on Saturday, May 2, 2026. He was born on May 20, 1940, to the late John and Elsie Turner, and was the eldest boy of twelve children.
Surviving is his wife of 65 years, Irene Moore Turner; daughter, Susan Paige Chandler; grandsons, Jack and Turner Chandler; sisters, Elizabeth Gregory (Carroll), Carolyn Parsons (Leonard), Debbie Lawless (Michael), and Betty Turner; brothers, Carlton Turner (Gayle), Douglas Turner (Elaine), Sammy Turner (Ellen), Danny Turner (Malia); and numerous nieces, nephews and their children.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, John “Jay” Edward Turner, Jr.; sisters, Peggy Smithers, Lottie Adams, and Olivia Adams.
John grew up on a tobacco farm in the Callands area of Pittsylvania County and never forgot his humble beginnings. He began his career at Meyers Tire in Martinsville in his late teens, learning the trade, and in 1979 he entered a partnership with Larry Martin and opened Riverside Tire. John loved his job, both the business aspect and the many relationships with customers and vendors. He retired from the business in 2017.
At various times throughout the years, John coached his son’s Little League Baseball Team, was a member of the Elk’s Club, and was on the Advisory Board of American National Bank. Until his health declined, he attended Chatham Heights Baptist Church where he served as an usher.
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at 4:30 PM, at Norris Funeral Services, Martinsville Chapel with Pastor Mike Hatfield officiating. The family will accept guests for one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Chatham Heights Baptist Church, 1235 Chatham Heights Rd, Martinsville, VA 24112.
