John Melvin George

July 5, 1941 - November 2, 2024

Mr. John Melvin George, age 83, of Westfield, passed away Saturday afternoon, November 2, 2024, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. He was born July 5, 1941, in Stokes County to the late John Samuel George and Evelyn Mae Collins George. Mr. George proudly served our country in the US Army during the Vietnam War. Melvin retired from Northwest Farmers Mutual Insurance Company after 40 years and having served as President for 10 years as well as being a current member of the board of directors. He loved his farm, his family, his community, and his church. He also loved turkey, quail, and grouse hunting, and fishing with his grandsons. Mr. George graduated from Francisco High School, attended Oak Ridge College on a basketball scholarship, was a member and Elder of Francisco Presbyterian Church, and a member of Francisco Ruritan Club and served as President at times. Mr. George is survived by his wife of 54 years, Nancy Elaine Shinault George of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, John Eric George and wife Suellyn, and Samuel Lee George; five grandsons, John Eric George, II, Nicholas Austin George, David Dietrich George and fiancé Brandi Wright, Michael Taylor and Kerri, and Travis Browning and Angela Cruz; two great grandchildren, Aiden Browning and Gabby Browning; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Glenda and Delano Biggs, Nellie and Lester Overby, and Rita and Jeff Clarke; three brothers and four sisters-in-law, Ira and Georgie George, Jerry and Wanda George, Robert and Shirley George, and Mavis George; and by several other family and friends. In addition to his parents, Melvin was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Erlene George Wood and husband Delbert; and by a brother, Samuel Thomas “Tommy” George. Funeral services will be held Saturday November 9, 2024, at 3:00pm at Francisco Presbyterian Church with Pastor Will Eades and Pastor Ricky Rogers officiating. Burial will follow on the George Farm in the George Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday at the church from 2:00 – 3:00pm.
