John Roy McFarland, 82, was born in Austin, Texas to James P. and Ollie Mae McFarland. At the time of his passing John was living in Moneta, Virginia.
 
John spent his formative years living in various cities throughout Texas. John attended Texas A&M University where he was a member of the Corp of Cadets and the Aggie Marching Band. John was in the Army Ready Reserve for two years. John spent his entire career working in the commercial refrigeration industry. Prior to moving to Virginia, John made his home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for over forty years, where he developed many long-lasting friendships. John was an active member of the Cathedral of St. John in Milwaukee where he loved to cook meals for the congregation. John was so active at the church that he was given the honorary title of Pastor for Hospitality. John was known for his “punny” sense of humor, caring nature, love of good food and drink, and his amazing cooking skills.  
 
John was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Colonel (retired) James W. McFarland, and sister-in-law, Sharron D. McFarland. John is survived by his nephews James W. McFarland, Jr, (Jayne) and Scott D. McFarland (Peggy), great nieces and nephews Samantha Hudson (Jake), Erin McFarland (Julien), Caitlin Horne (Colton), Kyle McFarland (Brittany) and Connor McFarland, and great great nephews William Hudson and Orson Freville-McFarland.
 
The family would like to thank the caregivers at Runk and Pratt SML and MediHome Hospice for the care and compassion they provided for John. A private funeral service will be held at the family Mausoleum in Austin, Texas, at a later date.  In lieu of flowers please think about giving a donation to your favorite charity in John's honor.
