Joseph Stanley Johnson

August 2, 1956 - October 14, 2026

Joseph S. Johnson, 70, of Rustburg, passed away peacefully at his residence on October 14, 2026. He was born on Thursday, August 2,1956 at Virginia Baptist Hospital, Lynchburg, VA.

Raised in Appomattox, VA he was the loving son of the late Hazel K. Johnson and Joseph P. (J.P.) Johnson Jr. He was also preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Vina C. Kress and Amos L. Kress, paternal grandparents, Joseph P. Johnson Sr. and Eula S. Johnson and a special aunt Shirley Martin.

After graduation from Appomattox High School in 1974, Joe attended Chowan University in Murfreesboro, North Carolina. He also received a letter of intent to play football at UVA later receiving a full scholarship to Liberty University until a knee injury ended his career.

Joe retired in 2021 from International Paper Company as an Inspector. He loved the Dallas Cowboys, UVA, the Baltimore Orioles and the Outer Banks. But above all he loved the lord being baptized at an early age.

Joe was the kindest person you would ever want to know. He had a great sense of humor and could tell you just about anything in the bible and any kind of football or baseball players name, number or stats with ease.

Joe is survived by his loving wife, Debra Johnson; daughters, Heather Marcus (Joey) Angela Charte of Appomattox and two stepdaughters whom he thought as much as his own. Jamie Browley (Zack) and Jennifer Wilson (Eli); four grandchildren Tyler and Ethan Marcus, Penelope Charte and Nathan Browley; mother-in-law, Linda Lacy; sister, Becky Asal, and his loving Shihtzu, Annie Sue.

Special thanks to Randy Lacy, April Overstreet, friends, neighbors, work family, UVA Medical Center 3 North, and Good Samaritan Hospice.

Per Joe’s request, there will be no service. The people that mattered most were there before his passing with calls, texts, visits, doing yardwork, offering support or just an ear to listen. Just take a minute and remember one good thing about Joe and smile. I have a lifetime of memories. In lieu of food or flowers, please consider donating to the Lynchburg Humane Society | 1211 Old Graves Mill Road | Lynchburg, VA 24502 or your favorite charity.

Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
