Joy Ann Soward
Joy Ann Soward, 90, of Lynchburg, Virginia, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, January 25, 2026. She was the wife of the late Rev. James E. Soward, Jr.
Born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, on July 8, 1935, Joy was the daughter of the late Carl E. Johnson and Signe Anderson Johnson. Joy’s deep faith and compassionate spirit were evident in all aspects of her life. A retired educator and financial aid professional, she dedicated many years of service to Liberty University, where she helped countless students navigate their academic journeys. Prior to her work at Liberty, she spent several years teaching Kindergarten, a role that brought her immense joy as she nurtured young minds and hearts.
She was a prayer warrior, never ceasing in her dedication to lift up others in prayer. Her love for her family was unparalleled, and her faith in God was the foundation of her life. Joy was an active member of Thomas Road Baptist Church, where she worshiped and served faithfully for many years. In her spare time, Joy loved to knit, creating beautiful pieces with her hands while reflecting on the beauty of life and faith.
In addition to her husband and parents, Joy was preceded in death by her brother, Lee Johnson. She is survived by her two sons, Jim Soward and David Soward (Rachel); her daughter, Cheryl Soward Giggetts; seven grandchildren, Brock Soward (Dayla), Brittany Austin (Josh), Epiphany VandeBogart (Shaun), Keilah Soward, James Soward (Sydney), Aryn Soward, and Kristi Giggetts; as well as four great-grandchildren, Bowen Austin, Lola Austin, Weston Soward, and Miyah Cramer.
A service celebrating Joy's life and faith will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 29, 2026, in the Pate Chapel at Thomas Road Baptist Church, with Pastor Jonathan Falwell officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Liberty Godparent Home, www.godparent.org/donate.
Joy’s legacy of love, faith, and service will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who knew her. She is now at rest in the arms of her Savior, surrounded by the eternal peace and joy of Heaven.
