Joyce Coffey Mason
Joyce Coffey Mason, 88, left this earthly life on February 11, 2025 in Heath, OH. She was born September 27, 1936, in Lynchburg, VA to the late Robert and Carolena (Mays) Coffey.
A 1954 graduate of Madison Heights High School, Joyce married her husband, Calvin Mason, on December 23, 1955. Their son, David, was born in September of 1965.
In addition to her full-time job at Central Virginia Training Center, Joyce helped her husband, Calvin, run a thriving wedding photography business for 25 years.
During her retirement, Joyce dedicated much of her time and energy to serving others. She and her husband Calvin were active members of Sandy Bottom Christian Church where Joyce served as Sunday School secretary. Accompanied by her husband, Joyce visited many patients at Lynchburg General Hospital as part of the Mended Hearts program and delivered countless meals to the elderly through Meals on Wheels.
When Calvin’s health began to fail, Joyce directed her energy into caring for him. In 2016, they moved from Madison Heights, VA to Heath, OH in order to be closer to their son, David.
After her husband’s passing in 2016, Joyce made the most of her time in Ohio. She became active in the Heath Church of Christ, teaching Sunday School and leading a neighborhood small-group Bible study. While building a new life in Ohio, Joyce regularly kept in contact with family and friends in her home state of Virginia.
Joyce loved her family dearly and listed her proudest moments as, “when our son, David, was born, the day he married Linda, and the day our granddaughter, Makenna, was born”. Living in Ohio allowed her the blessing of being present for several key events in her granddaughter’s life, including her high school graduation, college graduation, engagement, and wedding.
Throughout her life, Joyce conducted herself with dignity, gentleness, and compassion - traits that were amplified by her endearing Central Virginia accent. Her outward appearance could be accurately described as “always put together”; however, Joyce’s beauty did not come from the proper application of makeup or her keen sense of fashion. Her beauty came from a well-lived life.
Above all, Joyce was a dedicated follower of Jesus Christ. Her faith, instilled by her parents during childhood, was profoundly strengthened upon reading the Bible from cover to cover as an adult. She spent the last 40 years of her life dedicated not only to learning the Bible but living it out and sharing its teachings with others.
Joyce is survived by her son, David Mason (Linda), her granddaughter, Makenna Taylor (Noah), and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Calvin Thomas Mason, son, Dale Keith Mason, brother, Demarest Coffey (Mary Ann), and sister, Sandra Hughes (Jerry).
A service celebrating her life and faith will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, February 15, 2025 at Whitten Monelison Chapel with Pastor Tommy McBride officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.
