Joyce H. Shively

Joyce Hall Shively, 92, of Roanoke, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 21, 2026.Joyce was born on February 23, 1934 in Redwood, Virginia to the late Fred Newton Hall and Hettie Amos Hall. She graduated from Franklin County High School, and attended Radford College. In her early career, she worked as a secretary for Reynolds Metals Company in Richmond, Virginia, until August 1, 1959 when she married the love of her life, her high school sweetheart Robert Edward Shively Sr. They remained married for almost 52 years until his death in 2011. Together they raised 3 children, restored a historic house in Botetourt County, traveled, collected antiques, and shared many happy memories. In 1977, Joyce returned to the workforce as a secretary for the Emergency and Occupational Health Departments of Carilion Community Hospital, retiring in 1994.Joyce was patient and warm-hearted, and always found kind words to say about everyone she knew. She demonstrated humility and gratitude, receiving every situation with a sense of thanksgiving. She was an avid bridge player, and spent almost 45 years participating in bridge games and other events with her beloved bridge group. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, and treasured the time spent with her family above all else.In addition to her husband and parents, Joyce was preceded in death by her brothers, Alvin N. Hall, Thomas J. Hall, L. Frank Hall, Sam H. Hall, and Walter H. Hall; her sisters, Melba H. Lynch, Hazel H. Barker, Lula H. Craddock, and June H. Stanley; and her sister-in-law, Anne S. Webb.She is survived by her children, Robert E. “Ed” Shively Jr., Jane S. Snyder, and Julie S. (Don) Prater; her grandchildren, Jeffrey Alvarez, Zachary Alvarez, Katie (Raphael) Snyder, Claire Snyder, Cameron Snyder, Julianna Prater, and Katie (Mallory) Prater; her sisters-in-law, Jane B. Hall and Sarah S. (Ralph) Arthur; her special friend, Lorena S. Besch of Mayodan, NC; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to Redwood United Methodist Church, 3001 Old Franklin Turnpike, Rocky Mount, VA 24151.The family would like to thank the Wing 3 nursing staff of Friendship South for their care.Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 28, 2026 with Rev. L. Stanley Wright officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Memorial Park. Her family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
