Leonard "L.C." Carl Martin

Leonard C. “L.C.” Martin of Bassett was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He defined himself by his deep and abiding faith, his family, and his remarkable ability to build and repair nearly anything he could get his hands on—no matter the size of the project.

Leonard was a lifelong learner, constantly teaching himself how to solve problems and sharing that knowledge with others whenever he could. He carried this trait throughout his long career, from local manufacturing companies to Prillaman & Pace, and finally to Facilities Management at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville. You could often find him working on something for someone from before the sun rose until it set, with his morning coffee or favorite Dr. Pepper by his side. Those who knew him will remember this determination, ingenuity, and willingness to help others for decades to come.

For many years, Leonard felt called to share his love of gospel music, playing his Martin guitar while accompanied by his wife, Mary, for the enjoyment of those in assisted care facilities. His music was another way he shared his faith and brought joy to others.

Born on the Fourth of July, Leonard was a proud patriot. He could always be counted on to fly the flag and proudly display its colors at his home. He had a natural love for fireworks and, in keeping with his humor and wit, would often say that millions celebrated his birthday. He will be remembered for his love of God, country, and family.

Leonard embraced being called “Pops” and “Papa.” He loved taking his family traveling and enjoyed putting together puzzles, with favorite memories of both lovingly displayed throughout his home. Though his body grew tired, his spirit and his love for these things never wavered.

His wish would be for those who loved him to carry these things forward—to love God, cherish family, serve others, appreciate the simple joys of life, and embrace each day as a gift from the Lord, just as he did.
