Leonard Ray Hooper
LEONARD RAY HOOPER, 83, of Bastian, VA, passed away in his home on Saturday, March 9, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was born in Robbinsville, NC.
He is best remembered as a loving, generous, helpful and Godly man in the community. He was known for helping his neighbors and others with any kind of repair at any hour of the day or night.
He loved and appreciated his neighbors, fellow church members and coworkers in Bland County where he chose to make his home.
He loved to help others and to serve his Lord, Jesus Christ. He attended the Bastian Union Church for 49 years. He served as a Board member, Elder, and Sunday School teacher in his years of service.
Leonard worked on building the East River tunnel in Bland County, Cort Construction and retired from ABB in Bland.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother Arnold & Faye Phillips Hooper, two brothers, Charles and Tommy and two sisters, Elouise and Margaret, all of Robbinsville, NC.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Wilma Ferne Harman Hooper; his two sons, Kennth Hooper, of Griffin, GA and Jeff Hooper, of Rural Retreat, VA; his four daughters, Sheila & Stoney Milam of Bastian, VA, Debi & Len Lenford, of Jackson, GA, Beverly & Terry Waldrop, of Barnesville, GA and Trina Buchanan, of Robbinsville, NC.
God blessed Leonard with 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his brother & sister-in-law, Eugene & Linda Hooper and his sisters, Marie Carpenter and Louella Hooper, of Robbinsville, NC, Wanda Hooper, of Blue Ridge, GA, Joe Doris Blanton, of Franklin, NC and Ruth Strickland, of Myrtle Beach, SC.
He leaves behind many special sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, March 14, 2024 at 1:00 P.M. at Bastian Union Church with Pastor David Wall, Pastor Barry Busby and Richard Kidd officiating. The service will be live streamed at Bastian Union Church’s Facebook page as well as the YouTube channel, bastianunionchurch@bastianunionchurch1534. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church from 11:00 A.M. until service time, 1:00 P.M.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made in Leonard’s honor to the Bastian Union Church Building Fund, 29 Bears Trl., Bastian, VA 24314.
