Lew Thompson
Lew D. Thompson, 66, of Roanoke went home to be with the Lord Monday, September 9, 2024. He was preceded by his parents, Louvenia Smith Thompson and Billy Thompson.
Lew was a 1976 graduate of Northwood High School and a 1981 graduate of Campbell University. He was employed by the Kroger Company for many years serving as a store manager at several stores in North Carolina. He was later promoted and worked in the Human Resources Office in Roanoke, Virginia.
In 1989 he embarked on a new career in the insurance industry and opened what would become a successful State Farm Agency on Williamson Road. He was an active member of God’s House Baptist Ministry where he served as chairman of the Deacon’s Ministry; the Finance Committee, and always supported the various church activities.
Lew was an active and dedicated member of the following Masonic Lodges, the Alleghany Dunbar Lodge, Acorn Consistory # 103, Roanoke Commanders of the Rite 33 degree, and Aladdin Temple #111 Shriner’s. He received a number of accolades for his dedicated support. Among the awards received were Noble of the Year, and Potentate of the Year. In addition to his work with his church and the Masonic Order he was very involved in community affairs. He was a past member of several community boards and committees several being, the United Way of the Roanoke Valley, Roanoke County Public Schools Education Foundation, Carilion Virginia Tech – Residency Interview program for prospective residents, and the Pine Valley Golf Team. He was an active member of the Moving Toward a Cure Team of the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Renee Thompson; daughter, Erin Chambers (Dimitri); son, Brian Thompson; sister, Regina Thompson; mother-in-law, Delois Burnett; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be made to the Missions Fund C/O Gods House Baptist Ministry 3601 Melrose Avenue Roanoke, VA, or to the American Cancer Society’s Moving Toward a Cure Relay for Life team.
Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 14, 2024 at Gods House Baptist Ministry by Bishop Floyd W. Davis. A graveside service will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Monday, September 16, 2024 in New Hop Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Apex, N.C. The family will receive friends from 11:45 a.m. Saturday until service time on Saturday at the Church.
