Lillian Flowers Mantooth
Lillian Mantooth, “Mawmaw”, 83, of Danville, VA passed away on the morning of Wednesday,
October 18th, peacefully in her home with her loving husband.
She was born to the late James Flowers and Lucy Wansley Flowers on February 4th, 1940 in
Gastonia, North Carolina. She graduated from Lowell High School in Gastonia and married
Charles “Charlie” Mantooth on July 10th, 1961 whom she met while in Gastonia. She went on to
be a teacher's aide in Special Education in Athens, Waycross, and Lawrenceville, Georgia. In
1978 Charles and Lil moved to Danville, VA with their two sons, Mark and Tim Mantooth, to
open up Western Sizzlin Steakhouse. They made their home in Danville where they have lived
together since.
She is survived by her spouse, Charles Wilson Mantooth, her two sons, Mark Mantooth
(Sharon) and Tim Mantooth (Michelle), her grandchildren Meghan Taylor (James), Melanie
Mantooth, Macy Mantooth, Bennett Mantooth, Jamison Mantooth, Delaney Mantooth, her great
grandchildren, Madison and Leah Taylor, her sister, Shirley Davis, and numerous nieces and
nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, James and Lucy Flowers, four brothers, Blen,
Jack, Cade, and Daryl Flowers, and sister Sara Noblett.
Lillian Mantooth was an accomplished business woman alongside her husband Charles. Over
the years they had multiple business endeavors together such as Western Sizzlin Steakhouse,
real estate development and investment, and numerous projects at North Topsail Beach. Lillian
was extremely intelligent and always the go-to person for running ideas by. She had many other
talents, most notably interior design, decorating, and home remodeling. Lillian could make any
room feel extremely special with her maximalist design style and displays of collections from her
various world travels. Everyone knew Lillian for her bold sense of fashion and charisma; she
was a true Southern woman with a sense of style that was second to none.
Lillian was known for her elegance, fierceness, generosity, honesty, strength, and excellent
sense of humor. She was a beloved spouse, mother, mother-in-law, sister, grandmother, and
great-grandmother who loved her family deeply. Lillian was immensely proud of her family and
leaves behind wonderful memories that will be cherished for a lifetime.
The service will be held at 2pm on Monday, October 23rd at the Norris Funeral Home West End
Chapel at 511 Church St., Danville, VA 24541. The family will receive friends one hour prior to
the service at 1pm followed by a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to donate
to the Danville Life Saving Crew in honor of Lillian.
