Linda Gail Nelson
Linda Gail Witt Nelson, 83, of Lynchburg, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 2, 2026, at Fairmont Crossing in Amherst.
Born in Lynchburg on November 22, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Alfred Thomas Witt and Hazel Arthur Gray Witt.
Linda dedicated much of her life to caring for others. A graduate of the Lynchburg General School of Nursing, she enjoyed a rewarding 40-year career as a nurse at Lynchburg General Hospital. Throughout those years, she touched countless lives through her compassion, kindness, and dedication to those in her care.
Outside of her nursing career, Linda found joy in life's simple pleasures. She was an avid reader and a talented crocheter who especially enjoyed making blankets for her family, each one a special expression of her love. She had a creative spirit and enjoyed crafting and gardening. Blessed with a green thumb, she took great pride in nurturing her plants and flowers. Linda also treasured time spent at the beach, where she enjoyed the beauty and peacefulness of the ocean.
Linda's faith was an important part of her life. She was a member of Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church and, during her time at Fairmont Crossing, remained devoted to her faith by actively attending the worship services offered there. Her love for her family, her caring nature, and her strong faith were defining qualities of a life well lived.
She is survived by two daughters, Robin Ann Bush and Sherry Lynn Mitchum; one son, James Daniel Nelson, III; two sisters, Faye Brown and Jane Olsen (Bengt); one brother, Pete Witt (Valorie); nine grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service celebrating Linda's life and faith will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, November 6, 2026, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.
Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the American Diabetes Association.
