Linda Jane Butcher Johnson
Ms. Linda Jane Butcher Johnson, 78 of Mount Airy, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at Central Care in Mount Airy. She was born in Surry County, February 23, 1948, to the late Richard and Ressie Stoker Butcher. She ran cafés for most of her life and loved her Carolina Tarheels. Nannie had a special way of making everyone feel loved, welcomed, and important, no matter who they were or where they came from. She never thought she was better than anyone else. She was humble, kindhearted, and would give anything she had to help someone in need. Her generosity came from a place of genuine love, and she never hesitated to put someone else before herself. Her family was her greatest treasure. She loved her family more than words could ever express, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were truly the light of her life. She cherished every moment with them and took so much pride in watching them grow. The love she gave her family will live on through each of them for generations to come. Nannie was also one of the funniest people you could ever know. She loved to cut up, laugh, and make those around her smile. She had a personality that could light up a room. And while she was incredibly loving, anyone who knew her knew she could also be very hardheaded and set in her ways. She knew what she wanted, what she believed, and she wasn’t easily persuaded otherwise—and honestly, that was just part of what made her so wonderfully Nannie. She was a woman who gave so much of herself to others and asked for so little in return. Her love was unconditional, her heart was generous, and her presence was a gift to everyone fortunate enough to know her. Though our hearts are broken by her absence, we find comfort in knowing that the love she gave so freely will never leave us. Her memory will live on in her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and everyone whose life she touched. She was deeply loved. She will be deeply missed. And she will never, ever be forgotten. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Michael Nance; grandchildren, Dalton and Brittany Payne, Brandi Payne and Stephen Robertson, and Chasity and Charles Creed; her two great-grandbabies, Bailey Robertson and Landon Payne; two sisters, Teressa Gordon and Pasty Quesinberry; son-in-Law, David Payne; many special nieces and nephews; and several more family and friends. In addition to her parents, Nanny was preceded in death by her husband, Arvil Lee “Bud” Johnson; daughter, Anita Lynn Reeves Payne; two sisters, Lucille Hutson and Mary Boyd; brother, Charles Barker; and a son-in-law, Ricky Lambe. A graveside service will take place on Wednesday, October 7,2026, at Central View Missionary Baptist Church at 11:00am with Brother Michael Nance and Brother David Payne officiating. No formal visitation will take place at the funeral home. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Central Adult Care Activities Department on Hwy 601 in Mt. Airy
