Lois Smith Hart

Lois Smith Hart, age 95 of Fincastle, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on April 13, 2026 in Fincastle, VA.

She was born to Gentry and Dane Dunsagan Smith on May 9, 1930. She graduated from Bland High School in Bland, VA with the Class of 1947.

She married Roger Brown Hart, a school classmate on April 27, 1948. Their marriage lasted a remarkable 67 years at the death of Roger in 2016.

Since her husband was a minister, she served as the minister’s wife to four Church of Christ congregations: Garden Creek in Oakwood, VA, East Islip, N.Y., Haysi, VA, and Grottes, VA. She was a Bible School teacher and organized activities and directed Christmas and Easter programs for the youth to perform.

She was the Proverbs 31 Model of Excellence. She had noble character and brought her husband and family good all her life. She was a loving and kind woman with dignity and strength. Her children feel blessed by God for having her as their mother.

She was known as a humble servant of Christ, and a hard worker. Her warm hospitality was such a blessing to many. She graciously offered her home for many years to family members after various tragic events. She kept her mother-in-law, Minnie Hart and cared for her handicapped sister, Marcell Smith, for 17 years each.”

During her life she worked at three secular locations: Celanese Plant near Pearisburg, VA, Waldbaum’s in N.Y., and owned the Hart’s Shoe Store in Haysi, VA.

In 2019, she wrote her autobiography entitled, “Living Life’s Shadow” at the request of her children. She and family members wrote “Hart’s Book of Memories and Hearty Meals,” with her poetry about each child, their memories and favorite recipes.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Brown Hart; her brothers Alvin Smith, Jack Smith, Wilson Smith; her sisters, Marcella Smith, Sybil Smith, Dorothy Smith, and Audrey Greco; her son, Roger Lee Hart and a daughter, Helen Hart.

She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, two daughters and a son-in-law Tony and Gracie Hart of Fincastle, VA with whom she has lived since 2014; Joe and Patsy Hart of Sharpsburg, GA; Benjamin and Dorothy Hart of Verona, GA; Fran Sobieski of Beaufort, S.C.; Kathy and David Thornton of Grandy, N.C.; Meredith Hart of Bristol, VA, Widow of Roger Lee Hart; seventeen grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.

A celebration of Lois Hart’s life will be held at 12 o’clock on April 17, 2026, at Radar Funeral Home, 630 Roanoke Road, Daleville, VA with Jason Thornton officiating. The family will receive friends from 11–11:45 prior to the service beginning at 12.
