Lola Katherine Horton
Lola Kathrine Foley Horton, 72, of Bassett, VA, died peacefully on August 27, 2026, at her home in Bassett, VA, surrounded by her loving family of the home. After a selfless battle with recurring cancer never once losing her class, her dignity, or her resilience. She was born on August 29, 1954, in Princeton, WV to Frances Marie Hall Foley and Richard Samuel Foley Jr. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by the father of her children and her lifelong cherished friend Ronald E. Horton and her brother Steven Duane Foley of Bassett, VA.
When Lola was a teenager, she embraced natural ability andlifelong passion for apparel, quilts and various sewing creations. The craft, passed down through generations, led to working side by side with her mother sewing for the renowned Mountain Artisans of WV. Together they made distinct hand-pieced garments that celebrated Appalachian craft. This early experience launched a lifelong devotion to the needle arts, leaving behind a precious legacy of one of a kind, hand-crafted treasures.
She was born with music in her soul. From a young age being exposed to front porch picking by her father and uncles, her love of singing and appreciation for all genres of music was fueled. Later in life she was compelled to pursue guitar lessons, givingher a sense of confidence and pride, which led to her courage to publicly perform alongside others.
Being born in wild, wonderful West Virginia, she grew up with a love of exploring the woods, hiking, chasing waterfalls, and the freedom of being a child in the wild. This transcended intotraveling the United States exploring the wonders of nature and finding new trails close to home as a favorite pastime with her siblings. Lola had an innate, magical gift for gardening which she instilled in her girls.
Lola dedicated over 45 years of her life to the nursing profession as a registered nurse and was well-versed in many different areas of medicine. She was always interested in learning more and furthered her education obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Medical College of Virginia. Her gentle nature, clinical expertise, and unwavering empathy to her patients provided immense comfort to countless patients and their families throughout her career. Anyone who worked with her has never had anything but praise for her natural abilities and attention to detail.
Lola is survived by her children, Angela Horton Hazelwood (Tony) and Amanda Horton Kinney (Niven) of the home, threegrandchildren Shanna Hazelwood, Faith Hazelwood and Lola Camille Kinney of the home, and three great grandchildren,Leon Belcher, Deliah Belcher, and Clinton Reed. Also surviving are her sisters Debra Volkmer (Donald MD) of Pipestem, WV and Alice Jarrett and Peggy Washburn (Wayne) of Bassett, VA. Also left to carry her memory is a host of Aunts and Uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins and close friends that she dearly loved.
There will be a casual visitation and prayer remembering this woman for who she was, her unwavering strength, and her dedication to those she loved. This will be on Monday, August 31, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Bassett Funeral Service in Bassett, VA 24055.
