Lorene G. Hodges Hall
Lorene G. Hodges Hall
January 5, 1926 - November 5, 2022
Our precious and beautiful Mom went to her heavenly home on November 5th to be with Jesus and her family. She was born in Franklin County on January 5, 1926, a daughter of the late Joe and Mary Hodges. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Grover C. Hall, five brothers, two sisters, sons-in-law: David Lynch, Calvin Hurt, Rodney Cundiff, and Oney Hurt. Left to cherish her memory are nine daughters and sons-in-law, Fay Hurt, Bonnie Cundiff, Maryann Smith (Watson), Patsy Houston (Larry), Roxie Hurt, Jean Powell (Mike Thompson), Teresa Thompson (Jay Scott), Joan Reece (Ricky) and Cindy Matherly: three sons and daughters-in-law, Timmy Hall (Sheila), Jeff Hall (Tammy) and Steve Hall (Debbie) and her adopted #13 daughter, Gail Hutcherson: 21 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 3 step-great grandchildren, and 5 great great grandchildren. Also, her many nieces and nephews.
She had many loving and special friends: Ann Hodges, Eva Mae Tyree, Becky Bleicher, Irene Mattox, Shirley Hodges, Elsie Harrison, and her church family.
Lorene grew up in the Sontag area of Franklin County. Along with raising her 12 children, she helped raise tobacco crops until her husband became ill. At that time, she worked at Longview Restaurant for 32 ½ years. In May 1995 she was named Franklin County's Mother of the Year by the Rocky Mount Retail Merchants. She was an active member of Doe Run Christian Church for 83 years. She served as a diaconate, CWF member, and was always in the kitchen helping prepare and serve meals for all church occasions and events. She was a member of "Apple Dumpling Gang." This group made hundreds of apple pies as fundraisers to purchase Bibles. She was an avid reader, enjoyed working in her flowers, and cuddling her cats, especially Cookie.
But most of all she was MOM. Always had a smile, kiss, hug for you when you came in the door, always offered you something to eat, and always said "I love you" when you left. She made time to be an active part of all our lives and we are going to miss her so very much.
We want to thank her caregivers, Jill Hodges and Tammy Brumfield, for all the love and care they gave Mom. Thanks to the Carilion Hospice team: Helen, Jewell, Rick, & Jesse for helping us through this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Doe Run Christian Church, c/o Bonnie Turner, 684 Washboard Rd., Rocky Mount, Va. 24151.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, November 10, 2022 at Doe Run Christian Church with Pastor Michael Stump officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. Her family will receive friends 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, November 9, 2022 at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
