Lucille B. Shores

- January 9, 2024

Mrs. Lucille B. Shores, 96, of Thurmond, NC, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday morning, January 9, surrounded by devoted family and friends.

Mrs. Shores was born in Surry County to Curnie and Cassie Brendle. For almost 79 years, Lucille was a devoted wife to Arthur H. Shores, who preceded her in death in January 2022. Lucille’s and Arthur’s lives displayed their love of God, and they were faithful in worship, prayer, and service. They were dedicated members of Charity Hill Baptist Church, hard workers on their farm, and avid gardeners who enjoyed sharing with others. Prior to starting a family, Lucille worked at Chatham Manufacturing Company. She was a loving homemaker who took great joy in caring for her family. She was an outstanding cook and was always prepared for company and ready to welcome anyone to her kitchen table.

Lucille was a loving, generous, and kind neighbor to her friends and community. Many referred to her as a “second mom” who took time to teach and help whenever needed. She was also a gifted seamstress who was meticulous in her craft and generous in sharing her talents.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Rick H. Shores; one sister and brother-in-law, Marylene and James Comer; five brothers-in-law and five sisters-in-law, John Shores, Mary Levon Hauser (Richard), James Shores (Carol Shores Swaim), Clifton Shores (Maudaleen), Clinton Shores (Evelyn), and Magdalene Cox.

Mrs. Shores is survived by her daughter, Janie Johnson of State Road; a daughter-in-law, Pat White Shores of Thurmond; two granddaughters, Lori Shores Cogdill (Jason) of Winston-Salem and Suzanne Shores (Jeff Borandi) of Pittsburgh, PA; two great-grandsons, Thomas Shores Cogdill and Hampton Michael Cogdill of Winston-Salem; one sister-in-law, Odessa Shores of Elkin; one brother-in-law, Richard Cox of Thurmond; and many special nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 14 at Moody-Davis Funeral Home in Dobson from 1 - 2 pm. The service will be held at 2:00 pm in Moody-Davis Chapel. Burial will follow at Charity Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Charity Hill Baptist Church, c/o Mike Shores, 562 Liberty School Road, State Road, NC 28676, or to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030.

The family would like to express their gratitude for Lucille’s dedicated caregivers, who provided thoughtful and compassionate care over the past two years and who are treasured friends for whom we give thanks. The family would also like to thank the staff at Mountain Valley Hospice for the exceptional care they provided.
