Margaret Douglas Moncure Butler

April 11, 1959 - February 13, 2024

Margaret Douglas Moncure Butler of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Tuesday, February 13, 2024. She was born in Washington, D.C. to the late William Augustus and Margaret McNeale Moncure. She was raised in Alexandria and attended Oldfields School in Glencoe, MD, and Mary Baldwin College in Staunton.

She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Gilbert Eugene Butler Jr.; four children, Gilbert Eugene Butler III, William Augustus Moncure Butler, Alexander Knox Butler, and Margaret McNeale Butler; and four grandchildren. Also surviving are four brothers, William Adger Moffett III, Richard Cassius Lee Moncure, John McNeale Moncure, and William Augustus Moncure Jr.

Douglas was a member of the Roanoke Assembly, the Modern Arts Club, and Mill Mountain Garden Club.

Her goal in life was to be the best wife, mother, and friend she could be, and she succeeded totally.

The family wishes to express its heartfelt appreciation to the small group of Roanoke girlfriends and Mary Baldwin College classmates who gave Douglas such love during her period of decline.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, February 23, 2024, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 1 Mountain Ave., Roanoke, VA, with a reception afterward in the parish hall. Online condolences may be shared with the family by visiting www.Oakeys.com.
