Margaret Welch Tolbert

Mrs. Margaret Eileen Welch Tolbert age 87 of Mt. Airy, NC widow of Mr. Alvin “Al” Tolbert passed away Sunday October 1, 2023 at Northern Regional Hospital. She was born January 20, 1936 in Surry County to the late George H. and Jessie Belton Welch. She worked for Mt. Airy Mantel and Table Company for 13 years and retired from the North Carolina Granite Corporation where she worked for 27 years. She was a member of Bannertown Baptist Church where she had served on various committees, sang in the choir and was a member of the WMU for many years. She was a avid Rook player and sports fan. Surviving is a sister Pat Kinney, a special family friend and adopted sister, Marilyn Thronton, a brother-in-law, Lynn Cook, and two sisters-in-law, Gail B. Welch and Jerrie Welch Gordon, a special niece and nephew and wife, Denise Jordan, David and Beth Welch, who were her primary care givers, several other nieces and nephews, several great nieces and nephews and several great-great nieces and nephews and a great-great-great nephew. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Tolbert was preceded in death by her daughter Cynthia Margaret “Cindy” Tolbert and a son, Quinn Alvin Tolbert, sisters, Jessica Welch Allred, Dot Welch Clifton, LaRue Welch Stanley, Nancy Welch , Jane Welch Cook and infant sister, Peggy Welch and four brothers, Junior Welch, Charles Randall Welch, Frank Welch and Joe B. Welch. A celebration of life will be held 2:00 pm Friday October 6, 2023 at Bannertown Baptist Church. The service will be conducted by Rev. Mickey Cogdill. Burial will follow in Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends 12:30 pm Friday until time for the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bannertown Baptist Church Building Fund, 1834 Westfield Road, Mt. Airy, NC 27030.
