Marie Bateman Stone

Marie Bateman Stone, 87, of Bassett, VA passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at Riverside Health & Rehab. She was born on December 15, 1938, in Hampton, VA to the late Willie Bryan Bateman and Rosa Agnes Roberson Bateman. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her wonderful husband of forty-four years, Rufus Daniel Stone, Jr.; sisters, Lucille Parks, and Eunice Kirkman; and her brother, Jack Bateman.

Ms. Stone was a devoted mother and cherished member of her family who found great joy in spending time with the people she loved most. The holidays were especially meaningful to her, as she loved gathering her family together and preparing meals for everyone to enjoy. Her love for her family was evident in all that she did. She was a hardworking woman who grew up in Woolwine and spent her entire career working in the furniture industry. She took great pride in her work and was known for her strong work ethic and determination. She also enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, including shopping, mowing her yard, traveling to the beach and mountains, and cheering on NASCAR.

Ms. Stone had a generous heart and a special compassion for children. For two years, she and her daughter had the privilege of helping seven children through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, creating special memories and bringing joy to children and their families. She was also a woman of many talents and interests. In high school, she played basketball and later shared her love of music through singing. She had previously sung in her church choir, where her voice was another expression of the joy and love she carried with her. A breast cancer survivor, Ms. Stone faced life's challenges with strength and perseverance. Through every season of her life, she remained a loving mother, a hardworking woman, and a caring friend who made a lasting impact on those around her.

She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia “Cindi” Diane Hines (Melvin); sons, Danny Keith Stone (Sherry), and Mark Anthony Stone; and her grandchild, Rosa Danielle Stone.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at Norris Funeral Services. Funeral service will be held from 12:00 noon on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at Norris Funeral Services with Pastor Palmer Lowery officiating. Burial will follow the service at Fairystone Baptist Church Cemetery.
