Marie Murphy Garrett

Marie Murphy Garrett, 83, of Martinsville, VA passed away on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at Bedford Memorial Hospital. She was born on July 24, 1942, in Halifax County, Virginia, to the late Ernest C. Murphy and Eva Wilbourne Murphy. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband, James Wenford Garrett; her sisters, Berta M. Farmer and Anna M. Blanks; brother, Watson C. Murphy; and nephew, Ronnie Hayes.

Mrs. Garrett received a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts Degree from Longwood College and worked on doctoral studies at Virginia Tech. She taught English in Halifax County High School and Ferrum College; then Patrick Henry Community College for thirty-four years. She volunteered as a hospital chaplain and writer of Sunday School articles for Pathway Press in retirement. She was a longtime member of the Martinsville Church of God where she taught adult Sunday school class for over thirty years. Marie last attended the First Assembly of God in Martinsville.

Marie is survived by her sister Margaret Edwards of Ashville, N.C., her special companion, Ed the cat; her many loving nieces (8) and nephews (9), and numerous grand-nieces and nephews; and two very special neighbors who were always there to support her.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at Halifax Memorial Gardens in South Boston, Virginia (3211 Halifax Road (Rt. 501) South Boston, Virginia 24592).

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
