January 23, 1938 - February 27, 2025

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of US Navy Veteran Mark Steel, who left us on Thursday, Feb 27, 2025, in his beloved home in Floyd, VA. He was 87 years old.

Mark is survived by his treasured spouse, Diane Steel; his daughter, Christina Steel; Elijah Bowen, whom he took under his wing and guided like family; and many valued friends.

A Life Well Lived

Mark was a proud U.S. Navy veteran, having retired as an E8 Senior Chief Petty Officer. He served six combat tours during wartime, exemplifying courage, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to his country. His distinguished military career not only shaped his character but also left a lasting impact on those who served alongside him. His legacy of sacrifice and duty continues to inspire all who knew him.

That same strength and dedication carried into his personal life. Mark and his wife, Diane, recently celebrated 50 years of marriage—a partnership built on resilience, commitment, and shared purpose. Together they provided a home for their daughter and several foster children, offering them stability and guidance in their own difficult journeys.

Mark was a man who touched lives through his remarkable qualities. He had a gift for teaching and storytelling, sharing his wisdom and experiences with those around him. His favorite way to tell stories was while his hands were busy. He was known for his hard work and his passion for gardening, like when he built a greenhouse on a foundation of bricks he crafted himself. Whether passing down life lessons, explaining something new, or spinning a tale that left everyone captivated, he had a way of making conversations meaningful and memorable.

His generosity, concern for family, and strong commitment to his community left an indelible mark on everyone he met. Though he wasn’t one for grand speeches, his actions spoke volumes—showing that strength and dedication could build a solid foundation for life.

His legacy is one of love, hard work, and the quiet strength of character that inspired those who knew him. While we mourn his loss, we also celebrate a life well lived.

In accordance with his final wishes, no formal service or memorial gathering will be held. Instead, his ashes will be interred with his family on their mountain, where he will rest with his loved ones on the land he loved.

Our hearts go out to all who loved him. May his memory be a strength and comfort.
