Marthy Lewis Terry
Marthy Lewis Terry, 89, passed away on July 4, 2024 after a two year battle with cancer. She was born in Halifax County, VA on July 1, 1935 to the late Vergie Satterfield Lewis and the late Lynwood Errol Lewis. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 53 years, Mr. Walter David Terry Sr.
Marthy grew up in Halifax County on a tobacco farm. She loved playing softball, riding her bike, and playing many games with her brothers and sisters. She met her husband, Walter David Terry in 1950, and was married in a double ceremony with her brother, Addison (Nancy) in 1952. Marthy lived with her parents while her husband was in the Navy from 1952 to 1956. David and Marthy moved to Danville in 1958 and lived in the Danville area until 2016, when she moved to Richmond to live with her son. Marthy loved gardening, watching baseball and was a big fan of American Idol. Marthy was a spirited independent woman who was not afraid to voice her opinion on any subject. Marthy, is survived by her son; Walter David Terry Jr. (Kitty); one sister; Betty Jean Lewis Loftus (Ralph); five grandchildren; Matthew David Terry (Jessie), Benjamin James Terry, Cody Kevin Terry (Haylee), Brittany Terry, and Kayla Williams; 1 great grandchild; Preslee Terry; and 13 nieces and 11 nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Marthy was predeceased by a son; Tony Terry; and her siblings; Herman Owen Lewis (Lottie Bell), Lynwood Errol Lewis Jr. (Reva), Vernie Lewis Price (Andrew), Laura Lewis Milhouser (John), Addison Bedford Lewis (Nancy), Emmitt Lewis (Lissie Mae), Warner Lee Lewis (Thelma), and Aubrey Allen Lewis (Myrna).
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Sunday, July 7, 2024 at 2:00pm at Arbor Baptist Church, 15120 River Road, Sutherlin, VA 24594. Interment will following immediately following the service at the church cemetery. There will be a reception in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service.
