Mary Ann Landes
Mary Ann Landes, 73, of Salem, Va., went home to be with our Lord and Savior on April 18, 2024. She was born on February 25, 1951, to the late Robert Lee Simpkins and Mary Elizabeth Whitley. Her hobbies included doing God’s work! She saw a need for a food pantry in her apartment building, so she turned one of her closets into a food pantry that she kept stocked with food and other grocery items. The residents of the building could knock on her door at anytime and she would give them whatever they needed. If she didn’t have it, she found someone who did. She made hundreds of bracelets with bible verses on them just to give away to those she felt needed to hear God’s word and she would stop and pray with anyone. She started and led a prayer service for anyone in her apartment building to attend. At Christmas time she would make gift bags for all the residents in her building and secretly put them at everyone’s door. She started this several years ago and enlisted five others to help her. She was so full of God’s love, and she shared that love with those around her. Her faith could move mountains. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. In addition to her mother and father, she is preceded in death by her stepmother, Zelda E. Simpkins; a daughter, Traci Lynn Shatzer; and sisters, Nancy Casper, and Elsie Overton.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Kimberly Ann Hodges and husband, Rusty; grandchildren, Christopher Hodges and wife, Lauren, Justin Hodges and fiancé, Samantha Pack, Amber Plank, and Leigha Shatzer; nine great-grandchildren; brother, Jesse Lee Simpkins; sister, Debbie Lehmann; brother-in-law, Cliff Hancock; and the special man in her life, Robin Kegley.
A celebration of her life will be held in the Ridgecrest Regency Room on May 18 from 4 p.m - 6 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to your local food pantry.
