Mary Carter Haley

Mary Carter Haley, 91, moved to her heavenly home on Saturday, June 10, 2023.

Mary was born June 20, 1931, to Frank Carter and Gillie Bernard Carter in Gretna, VA. When Mary was two, Gillie died in childbirth and Frances Bernard Carter became her Mother in every sense of the word.

Mary was married to the love of her life, Richard William Haley, Sr., for 64 years. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by their son, Richard William Haley, Jr. and her brothers, Bernard Carter and Billy Carter.

Mary is survived by her son, Mark Haley (Beverly), her daughter Mary Butler (Bill), her sisters Ann Derby and Joyce Melvin, a sister-in-law Virginia Carter and four grandchildren; Adam Butler (Erika), Lydia Van Sant (Larry), Becky Butler (Neil) and David East (Blair). Additionally, she is survived by seven great-grandchildren; Gentry East, Idris Butler, Paul Van Sant, Merritt Van Sant, Hugo Butler, Yves Ashton and Elouise Butler.

Mary was a longtime member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church in Danville, VA. She was employed by C & P Telephone Company from 1950-1983. She was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America where she served in many local and state offices. She was a volunteer at Danville Memorial Hospital from 1984 until 2018.

Mary was also known for her fantastic cooking!

Graveside services will be held at Danville Memorial Gardens on Tuesday, June 20, 2023 at 11:00am with the Reverend Steve Chromy officiating.
