Mary Elizabeth Gilbert Wells

June 9, 1923 - October 22, 2026

Mary Elizabeth Gilbert Wells, 103, passed away on Thursday, October 22, 2026, at SOVAH Health in Martinsville, Virginia. She lived a remarkably long life, maintaining her cheerful spirit and sense of humor until the end. Even in her final days, she could often be heard singing softly to herself or making a quick, witty remark.

Born on June 9, 1923, in Franklin County, Mary devoted much of her life to her family. A homemaker and loving mother, she played a central role in raising her three children, Carolyn Elizabeth Wells, Robert Melvin Wells Jr., and Richard Stephen Wells. She also held a special place in the lives of her five grandchildren, helping shape the people they would become and bringing joy to their lives throughout their adolescence.

On December 26, 1941, Mary married Robert Melvin Wells. Their marriage spanned nearly 75 years, until Robert's passing on October 7, 2016. Their love for one another remained strong throughout their life together, and they shared many interests, including antique shopping. Mary's return to her beloved husband will be especially poignant: she will be laid to rest beside him at Roselawn Chapel on what would have been his 106th birthday, Friday, October 30, 202 at 11:00 AM.

Mary was an avid reader who enjoyed an active social life, including membership in a local bridge club. She was also a Cub Scout leader, giving her time and energy to the children in her community. Her faith was an important part of her life, and she was a member of First Baptist Church in Martinsville, where she also served as a Sunday school teacher.

Mary was outgoing and loved talking with people. She had a lively personality and a natural gift for conversation. Even as her world grew quieter, she continued to sing to herself and make little remarks that reflected her enduring sense of humor.

Mary's life was defined by her devotion to her family, the enduring love she shared with her husband, and the warmth and humor she brought to those around her. After more than a decade apart, she will be laid to rest beside Robert, reunited with the partner with whom she shared nearly 75 years of marriage.
