The family of Mary Evelyn Scarbrough Kittrell will hold a private memorial service to honor her at 2:00 PM on Sunday, October 15, 2023, at her home in Millboro, Virginia with Reverend Tom Quick officiating. Nicely
Funeral Home will handle arrangements.
A later memorial service will be held to honor her in Kemper County, Mississippi, date and place TBA.
Mary Evelyn Scarbrough Kittrell, age 81, passed away Sunday, October 1, 2023, at her home in Millboro, Virginia.
Mary Kittrell was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and a devoted nurse and friend. She loved to sing in church and used her beautiful soprano voice to bless others. She shared her love of singing with her daughters and grandchildren. Mary enjoyed gardening and growing beautiful flowers. She had a gift for growing things, and it was said of her that “she could grow the Garden of Eden out of concrete.” Everyone who knew her agreed she grew the most beautiful flowers around. Mary always had a smile on her face and was known to give the best hugs to her family and friends. She was kind and compassionate, and always made room for love in her busy days.
Mary Evelyn Scarbrough Kittrell was born in Lauderdale County, Mississippi and later moved with her parents to Kemper County, Mississippi. She met her husband, Thomas Kittrell, in high school, and married him in 1961. They welcomed a set of twin girls, Betsy Evelyn and Betty Carolyn, in 1962; a daughter, Rachel Elizabeth, in 1964; and another set of twin girls, Martha Anne and Sarah Lynn in 1966.
Mary was a member of Alawine Springs Church of God as a child; and Frazier Grove Church of God, Antioch Baptist Church, and Phalti Baptist Church in Mississippi. She was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church and Craigsville Baptist Church in Virginia. She loved attending church, where she sang in the choir. Mary’s favorite Bible verse was Psalm 19:14 – “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.”
Mary worked in several retail stores and restaurants in early adulthood. She began driving a school bus for Neshoba County School District, Philadelphia, MS in 1972 and continued through 1984. She was loved and
respected by her students, and was thought of as a tough, but kind and loving bus driver.
When her children were grown, Mary obtained her Nursing Degree from Meridian Community College in 1992. She worked as an LPN and later as an RN at Riley Memorial Hospital in Meridian, Mississippi for many years. She later worked at Anderson Regional Medical Center and Queen City Nursing Home in Meridian, and Pioneer Community Hospital in Newton, MS. Mary was regarded as a hard-working, kind and compassionate nurse by her coworkers and her patients. She was known to always have a smile and a kind word for those in her care. Mary retired from nursing in 2012. She remained active in gardening, church, and caring for her growing family.
Mary and her husband Thomas moved to the Blue Ridge Mountains in Bedford County, Virginia in 2013 to be closer to 2 of her daughters, and to enjoy their love of the mountains and hiking. They later moved to the Alleghany Mountains in Bath County, Virginia where Mary lived out the remainder of her life as a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Mary Kittrell is survived by her husband of 62 years, Thomas Edward Kittrell; her daughters, Betsy (Olen) Mabry, Betty Raymond, Rachel Scarbrough, Martha Morgan, and Sarah (Tommy) Sullivan; her grandchildren, Marcus (Sandi) Raymond, Brooke (Shay) McMullen, Sylvia (Bob) James, Jed (Annette) Mabry, Joshua (Emily) Carter, Kelsey Bondurant, Nichole (Dustin) Wilson, Sam (Alyssa) Sullivan, Jacob Sullivan, and Damion McMullan; her great-grandchildren, Lucas Raymond, Harmony Raymond, Joseph Raymond, Sonya Bondurant, Mary Grace James, Jared Carter, Ivy Bondurant, Amelia Carter, Garreth Raymond, Audrey Bondurant, Korbin Wilson, Roy Sessums, Evelynn Mabry, Isabella Mazingo, Kenzie Wilson, Hunter Sessums, Jenson Sullivan, Zoe Sullivan, Kaleb Wilson, Lillith Williamson, Maximus Raymond, Annelyn Sessums, Kash Sullivan, and Harley Sullivan; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family.
Mary Kittrell was preceded in death by her parents, Grady Jefferson and Sylvia Alawine Scarbrough; her brother, Grady Marvin Scarbrough; her great-grandson Arrow Raymond; and her son-in-laws, David Sage and Scotty Morgan.
Mary’s husband, daughters, and family would like to say a special “Thank you” to the staff at Connections Plus Hospice for the excellent, kind, and compassionate care they gave Mary during her illness.
