She shared her love of singing with her daughters and grandchildren. Mary enjoyed gardening and growing beautiful flowers. She had a gift for growing things, and it was said of her that “she could grow the Garden of Eden out of concrete.” Everyone who knew her agreed she grew the most beautiful flowers around. Mary always had a smile on her face and was known to give the best hugs to her family and friends. She was kind and compassionate, and always made room for love in her busy days.

Mary Evelyn Scarbrough Kittrell was born in Lauderdale County, Mississippi and later moved with her parents to Kemper County, Mississippi. She met her husband, Thomas Kittrell, in high school, and married him in 1961. Mary’s favorite Bible verse was Psalm 19:14 – “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.”

Mary worked in several retail stores and restaurants in early adulthood. She began driving a school bus for Neshoba County School District, Philadelphia, MS in 1972 and continued through 1984. She was loved and

When her children were grown, Mary obtained her Nursing Degree from Meridian Community College in 1992. She worked as an LPN and later as an RN at Riley Memorial Hospital in Meridian, Mississippi for many years. She later worked at Anderson Regional Medical Center and Queen City Nursing Home in Meridian, and Pioneer Community Hospital in Newton, MS. Mary retired from nursing in 2012. She remained active in gardening, church, and caring for her growing family.

Mary and her husband Thomas moved to the Blue Ridge Mountains in Bedford County, Virginia in 2013 to be closer to 2 of her daughters, and to enjoy their love of the mountains and hiking.
