Michael Alexander Gilmer
Michael Alexander Gilmer, 72, of Ridgeway, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 17, 2026, at his residence. He was born on October 25, 1953, in Lebanon, Virginia, to the late Virgil Rasnake and the late Mary Osborne Gilmer.
Michael was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He was united in marriage to his beloved wife, Freda Gail Spencer Gilmer, and they shared 26 years of marriage together. Michael was a man who deeply loved his family and cherished the time he spent with his children and grandchildren.
He was a hardworking man who took pride in what he did and was known for being dependable and dedicated.
Growing up, Michael was raised by his father, Turner A. Gilmer. In his earlier years, he enjoyed riding and caring for horses. He was also a gun enthusiast and enjoyed bowling with Freda for many years. Michael and Freda shared a love for traveling and enjoyed taking trips to different places, creating memories together along the way. Michael was also known for his particular attention to cleanliness. He was, as his family affectionately described him, a “clean fanatic.”
He is survived by his wife, Freda Gail Spencer Gilmer; his daughter, Deana Martin; his sons, Justin Stevens, James R. Donovant, and Jason A. Donovant; his sisters, Mary Francis Wallace (Sherman) and Eilen Gilmer (Tim Alley); his brother, Turner Ashby Gilmer, III; his grandchildren, Devin Martin, Dylan Martin, and Destiny Martin; his great-grandson, Weston Martin; along with nieces, nephews, extended family, and many friends.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at 1:00 PM at the Wright Funeral Service Martinsville Chapel with Pastor Carson Williams, officiating. Interment will follow at Henry Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
