December 9, 1958 - June 28, 2025

Michael Allen Light, age 66 of Lynchburg, Virginia passed away on Saturday, June 28, 2025 at his home. He was born on Tuesday, December 9, 1958, to the late Walter Harding Light and Susie (Hall) Light.

Michael was a self-taught, gifted mechanic, plumber, machinist, and all around you name it, he could fix it kind of person. He had a love for fast cars at an early age. But before he could drive a hotrod, he built model cars and raced slot cars at the local hobby shop where he won first, second and third place across all categories. He was a skilled craftsman even as a young boy. It was nothing for him to come back with ribbons and trophies for everything he competed for.

Michael was a news junkie and had a passion for watching a wide range of documentaries on topics one would never think he was interested in. Then he could hold a conversation sharing details that most of us would not have retained. He had an amazing memory for his childhood and teenage antics which were legendary. And if you were on the other end of any of them, you would know why they were legendary. Most people who really knew Michael knew he was a straight shooter when it came to telling you like it is. There was never a candy coat…always the raw , unvarnished truth. He had lung cancer several years back but recovered well from that. He fell and had a brain bleed and recovered from that. He had several other scrapes and emergency surgeries that would have taken most of us out of here. We had somewhat become desensitized to his major issues as he overcame them like a cat with 9 lives. We all kind of joked about that lightheartedly.

He is survived by his beloved and faithful canine companions, Titus and Abby, his children: Jason Light of Evington, Virginia; Travis Light of Madison Heights and Zacharey Light. A special place in his heart for his long-time partner of 30+ years, Sue Burley and his best friend Tony Floyd.

His grandchildren: Hayden Light, Hayley Light, and Kaylin Light.

Michael is also survived by his siblings: sister, Wanda Hendricks of Rustburg and Katie Light-Keene (Jim) of Chesapeake, Virginia. His niece Laura Scrivener and great niece and great nephew, Madison & Tyler Scrivener. He is predeceased by his sister, Linda Sweeney, founder of Sweeney’s Curious Goods Antique store.

A celebration of life will be held graveside in the Garden of Apostles, Fort Hill Cemetery, 11 AM Monday, July 7, 2025 with the Reverend Larry Fitzgerald of Central Baptist Church officiating.
