Michael Jerome Peters

It is with sad hearts that we announce Michael J. Peters, 67, of Salem, Va., passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 3, 2024.

He received his bachelor’s degree in physical therapy from SUNY Downstate in New York, and his master’s degree in education from Virginia Tech. He worked for 30 years for Carilion as a physical therapist in various clinics and was director of the PTA program for the College of Health Sciences. Most recently, he worked at Lewis-Gale in the inpatient rehab unit. He strived for perfection as a physical therapist receiving his orthopedic-certified specialist, geriatric-certified specialist, neurologic-certified specialist, and vestibular specialist credentials.

He loved working outside in the yard, watching movies, eating out, traveling, and spending time with his family.

Preceding him in death was his mother, Patti Peters; and his sister, Arleen Peters.

His surviving family includes his loving wife, Sheila Peters of Salem, Va.; sons, Nicholas Peters of Norfolk, Va. and Christopher Peters of Blacksburg, Va.; sister, Maureen Peters of Long Island, N.Y.; brother, Johnny Peters of Long Island, N.Y.; and father, John Peters, of Long Island, N.Y.; mother-in-law, JoAnn Copenhaver.

A time to celebrate Michael’s life will take place on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem, Va. A period of visitation will begin at 2 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m.
