Michael Lane Potter
Michael Lane Potter, 72, of Roanoke, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Mike was born and raised in Roanoke and was a proud 1971 graduate of William Fleming High School, where he was honored as the Most Outstanding Senior in ROTC — a reflection of the character and discipline that would define his life.
He went on to serve his community with dedication and integrity as a Deputy Sheriff with the Roanoke City Sheriff's Office for 26 years. Mike retired in 2009, leaving behind a legacy of quiet strength, loyalty, and commitment to protecting others.
Above all else, Mike was a family man. He was preceded in death by his beloved son and best friend, Matthew Potter; his mother, Freda Potter; granddaughter, Emerson Lane Cecil; and grandmother, Cora Felts Potter.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Joyce Potter; his daughter, Ashley Cecil (Matt); daughter-in-law, Dawn Potter; grandchildren, Brandon Potter, Cole Cecil, Reese Cecil, and Kennedy Potter; along with numerous extended family members and dear friends who will miss him deeply.
Music was Mike's lifelong passion. A gifted and self-taught musician, he sang and played guitar, banjo, and piano, and was a talented songwriter. Some of his happiest moments were spent playing music at local venues alongside his son, Matt, and later, his grandson, Brandon. His favorite place to play was The Hangout — a place filled with laughter, friends, and the sound of songs he loved. Music was more than a hobby to Mike; it was how he connected, how he expressed joy, and how he left a little piece of himself with everyone who listened.
Mike was also a lifelong and loyal Dallas Cowboys fan — painfully faithful through every season. Through the years, one of his favorite pastimes was riding his Harley Davidson — whether riding through the mountains or simply taking a quiet drive, those rides brought him peace and freedom. At home, he enjoyed the companionship of his special dog, Ruger, who was always close by his side. And while his absence leaves an immeasurable void, his legacy will live on in all who were blessed to know him.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 14, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road, Roanoke, VA 24019.
