Mitchell "Vern" Wood

Mitchell “Vern” Wood, 76, passed away on January 27, 2026. Vern is now with the Lord in Heaven because of his faith in Jesus, and acceptance of Him as his Lord and Savior.

He was born in Bassett, Virginia, on September 12, 1949, to the late Richard Glenn Wood and Emily Hiatt Wood. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Lou Pilson Wood; and nephew, Corporal Jonathan Bowling.

Vern honorably served in the Army National Guard from 1969 – 1975. During this time, he began working for Bassett Furniture at the age of 20. He dedicated 38 years to the company, serving in many roles. He married Mary Lou in September 1970. Together, they spent 46 years building a life filled with memories of laughter and love.

Vern enjoyed many of life’s pleasures - the Lord, his family, his church - Fort Trial Baptist Church, and all those who made up his church family. In his spare time, Vern was an avid beekeeper for 24 years.

Vern is survived by his sons, Bridger Wood (Maggie) and Brandon Wood (Emily); brother, Kent Wood (Debbie); grandchildren, Hailey (Kenneth), Brittany (Cameron), Taylor, Paisley, John Lucas, Henry, Mitchell and Emma; and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A Visitation will be held on Friday, February 6, 2026, at Fort Trial Baptist Church, in Stanleytown, Virginia, from 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM. The Memorial Service will begin at 3:00 PM, with Dr. Reverend Joey McNeil and Reverend Brandon Wood officiating. A private burial will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Fort Trial Baptist Church in Stanleytown or to Mountain Valley Hospice, in Vern’s honor.
