Mrs. Hattie Frances Martin Turner
Hattie Francis Martin Turner was born to Harry Taylor Martin and Etter Purdy Martin in Bassett, Va., on December 15, 1931. The family lived in Patrick County, Va.
Hattie married Daniel V. Turner, Jr. on December 8, 1950, and they settled in Bassett, Va. She and DV had three children – Timothy Daniel, Roger Lee, and Rebecca Ann. They were married 68 years before DV’s death in April 2018. Hattie also lost her son, Tim, to covid in October 2019.
She was the last of 7 brothers and sisters – Sanford, Roy, Arthur, Irene, Christine, and Mildred.
Hattie graduated from Hardin Reynolds Memorial High School in 1951 as class Valedictorian. She worked at Sanville Elementary School for 20 years as a Teacher’s Aide.
She has been a member of Blackberry Baptist Church since 1952 where she served as Sunday School teacher, Director of the Children’s Sunday School Department, church historian and church librarian, managing the Summer Reading Program for many years. Her favorite hymn was Because He Lives.
Hattie loved holidays and family events and vacations to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. She was an avid quilter, sewing quilts for all her children and grandchildren. She loved history, especially the history of her church and the local community.
She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and her quilts will keep us warm for many years to come.
A graveside service will be held at Old Center Church cemetery on Good Friday, April 7, 2023 at 11 AM. The family will receive friends at the graveside one hour prior to the service. Rev. Darrell Joyce will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Blackberry Building Fund or Patrick Henry Fire Department.
