Oma Lee Spencer

March 24, 1930 - May 29, 2023

Oma Lee Spencer 93 of Roanoke, went to be with his lord and savior on May 29, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. Oma was born, March 24, 1930 to Joseph N and Lois Spencer, of Roanoke, VA.  Oma was predeceased by his parents and siblings beginning with his sisters, Dorothy Newman, Deane Ferguson, Libby Spencer, Estelle Megginson, and brother Joseph (Buck) Spencer.

 He is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Edna H. Spencer.  Also, survived by his son, Michael N. Spencer (Joy), his daughter, Diane Spencer Harrison (Ronnie).  He has four grandchildren, Kimberly Spencer Bowen (Tommy), Shannon Harrison Atwell (Dan), Kevin Spencer, Gregory Harrison (Dana).  He was blessed with ten great-grandchildren, Kaylie Bowen Koshuta (Jeffrey), Christian Atwell (Alyson), Madison Bowen, Abrey Atwell, Gabrielle Atwell, Ridge Bowen, Abigail Harrison, Skylar Spencer, Chase Harrison, Adeline Harrison, and one great-great-grandson, Logan Koshuta.

Oma loved God and loved his family; he cherished Edna and told her every day that he loved her.  She was the love of his life, and he wanted to make sure that everyone knew this. Oma provided for his family, he worked at Greyhound bus garage,  he was hired with Hennis Freight Lines.  The company later was bought by Spector Freight lines. Oma was a master mechanic for both companies. Oma retired from Spector Freight lines. Oma continued working part-time in maintenance at Greenville Nursery where he was the handyman.  Later, he was employed part-time by Roanoke County Garage where he worked and was told that he brought something to this garage that no one has ever brought before.

Oma loved all types of hunting, especially rabbit hunting.  He loved his beagles and loved training them for hunting.  He enjoyed all his trips to Dawson, GA where he would hunt with Mike and nephew, Mickey Newman.  This, for several years, was an annual trip, until his health wouldn’t permit him to make the trip.  He continued hunting locally with his son, Mike.

Oma was a member of the Melrose Masonic Lodge #139.  Recently Oma received his 70th year pin and certificate that was presented to him, at Pheasant Ridge Rehab and Nursing Home.

Oma was a long time member of Edgewood Christian church. He would walk there to church as a youngster.  Oma served as Elder, Sunday school teacher, and other positions to help to spread the gospel.

The celebration of life will be held at Edgewood Christian Church, 1006 Peck Street, NW Roanoke, VA 24017. The service will be held by Larry Adkin, former preacher at Edgewood, and also Pastor Seth Bryant.  Larry Adkins was the preacher during the time that Oma served as Elder.  The family will receive friends and family one hour prior to the service.  The service will be held Thursday, June 1, 2023 at 11:00 am.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Edgewood Christian Church or Melrose Masonic Lodge, in Oma’s memory.
