Patricia Catherine Long Carey
Patricia Catherine Long Carey, age 86, of Christiansburg died, Friday, September 30, 2022, at 10:20 PM. Her Husband Nelson George Carey, Daughter Cheryl Nannette Carey and Grandson Carl Ryan Linkous were at her bedside at Lewis Gale Montgomery Hospital in Salem. She was born in Long Island, NY on August 27, 1936, to the late John Walter and Barbara Franklin Long. She is preceded in death by her brother John Walter Long Jr. She is survived by her husband, Nelson George Carey; Daughter, Cheryl Nannette Carey of Christiansburg, VA; children, Glenn Christopher Carey of Green Acres, FL (wife tammy Pannell), Cheryl Nannette Carey of Christiansburg, VA; grandsons are Brian Carey of FL, and Carl Ryan Linkous of Christiansburg, VA; nieces, Sarah King and Allie Long of Long Island, NY; great nieces, Lucy May and Harlee Grace; and nephew, Justin Long of Long Island, NY. Patricia was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was very active in her church, St Mary’s Catholic Church, in Blacksburg, VA. She was a member of St Mary’s Rosary Makers, where she made over 1000 rosaries, which were shipped around the world. She was a money counter, heading up a group who cleaned the worship area of the church every Monday, she was a baker for funeral receptions, and a caller to alert the bakers, she crocheted small gift blankets for the newly baptized, and shawls for the sick. She organized a court of Catholic Daughters of the Americas and served as the Charter Regent. Among the Leggett employees and the Knights of Columbus, Patricia and Nelson became known as the Arthur Murray couple. The highlight of their dance career was at Knights of Columbus Convention, where they went on a midnight cruise on the Spirit of Norfolk and danced the night away on the upper and lower deck. They were loving sweethearts for 58 years! Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday, October 5, 2022, at 11:00 A.M. in the Westview Cemetery, with the Father John Asare officiating. The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, with a rosary service at 7:00 P.M. at McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Dr. S.W. Blacksburg, Va. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Toys from the Heart, 905 Collins St., Christiansburg, Va 24073.
