Ray Dueveen Smith
Ray Dueveen Smith, 66, of Axton, Virginia, passed away Tuesday, September 17, 2024. He was born March 24, 1958, in Bassett, Virginia, to the late Giles Marshal Smith and Hazel Louise Johnson Smith.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Wilbert Smith; brothers-in-law, Kenneth “Kenny” Loper and Arthur “Pete” Page.Ray was a dedicated husband, father, and papa. He was a 1976 graduate of Bassett high school and attended Shaw University. Family meant everything to him, and in his own special way of telling stories, spending time, or teaching them hunting/carpentry skills, he showed his love. The four of his grandchildren were the center of his world. He enjoyed their football and volleyball games, watching them cheer, and seeing their artwork. Aside from that, he took great pride in his business, Ray’s Painting and Home Repairs. Ray was a member of Mountain Valley Missionary Baptist church. In addition to spending time with family, going to church, hunting, and fishing were things he truly enjoyed.He is survived by his loving wife of thirty-seven years, Fannie Marie Haislip Smith; daughters, Tasha Sherie Hairston and Mercedes Danielle Smith; grandchildren, Tahjir Malik Hairston, DaNiyah Nevaeh Hairston, Taylin Monroe Hairston, and Reagan Chance Hairston; sisters, Brenda Fitzgerald, Annie Loper, Sarah Martin (Fred), Eunice Carter, Kay Page, Fran Preston, and Lisa Smith; brothers, Garry Smith (Joyce), Dwight Smith, Elmer Smith (Doris), Phil Smith (Ruth), and Fred Smith; sisters-in-law, Olinda “Blondie” Smith, Janice Walker, and Betty Haislip Goins; brothers-in-law, Haywood Haislip (Rose) and Jason Haislip (Felicia); numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, family, and friends.The funeral will be Monday, September 23, 2024, at 12:00 PM at Star of Bethlehem Baptist Church, 1116 Mary Hunter Drive, Bassett, Virginia, with Pastor John Breedlove officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Valley Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, 8893 Mountain Valley Road, Axton, Virginia.
