Robert Armistead Leece
Robert Armistead Leece “Bob”, of Pearisburg, Virginia, a cherished father, veteran, and lifelong scholar, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2025, at the Veterans Hospital in Salem, Virginia. Born on December 23, 1931, in Pearisburg, Virginia, to the late James and Helen Armistead Leece, Bob's life was marked by a passion for education, service, and community.
A standout quarterback at Morristown College, Robert's leadership on the field was a precursor to the leadership he would exhibit throughout his life. Furthering his educational journey, Robert obtained a teaching degree and then pursued graduate studies at Hampton University. His love for knowledge was not only a personal pursuit but a gift he generously shared with others through his teaching.
Bob was a true patriot, proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. His commitment to his nation continued at the Pentagon and later as he worked with the Railway Mail Service. Robert's dedication to service found its pinnacle in his role as Chief of Medical Information for the Department of Veterans Affairs, a position that he held with honor until he settled in Massachusetts. Following a career of service, he would return home to Pearisburg where he could further grow his roots, his gardens, and cultivate friendships.
Robert was a true gentleman, known for his kind-hearted and approachable nature. He was a fixture at the local Hardee's Breakfast group, where he shared many a morning with close friends, discussing everything from literature to local news. His interests were diverse and reflected his zest for life; he was an avid golfer, a voracious reader, and a skilled gardener who could often be found tending to his plants with the same care and attention he gave to all aspects of his life.
He is survived by his loving son, Matthew Leece, who will carry forward the legacy of his father's warmth, wisdom, and generosity of spirit. Robert's departure leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him, yet his influence remains a guiding force in the lives of his family, friends, and the many individuals he touched through his work and community involvement.
Robert Armistead Leece lived a full life, marked by accomplishment and permeated with the values of dedication, friendship, and love. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we celebrate the enduring impact he has made on the world and the memories he leaves behind, which will continue to inspire and comfort those who were fortunate enough to know him.
