Robert Chapman McGuire
Robert Chapman "Chapman" McGuire, 85, of Hardy, Virginia, passed away peacefully on September 8, 2026, in Roanoke.
Born on February 28, 1941, in Roanoke, Virginia, Chapman was the son of the late Raymond Ozzie McGuire and Bessie Chambers McGuire. A lifelong resident of the Hardy area, he was known for his strong work ethic, generous spirit, and willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
Chapman graduated from Franklin County High School in 1959. Following graduation, he proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1966 to 1968. After completing his military service, he began his career with Holdren's Appliances. Through hard work and determination, he later opened Mac's Maytag in Salem, building a reputation for honesty, quality service, and dedication to his customers. The business eventually grew into Tarpley's & Mac's, where Chapman continued serving the Salem community and beyond.
A faithful life-member of Nineveh Church of the Brethren in Hardy for more than 80 years, Chapman served as a Deacon along with many other roles within the church and lived out his faith through service, kindness, and devotion to others. His church family held a special place in his heart, and he remained actively involved throughout his life.
Chapman found great joy in gardening, camping, farming, yard work, and tinkering with small projects. A true "jack of all trades," there seemed to be little he could not fix or build. Whether helping a neighbor, repairing something for a friend, or working outdoors, he never hesitated to share his time, talents, and knowledge. His generosity and willingness to help others will be remembered by all who knew him.
Above all, Chapman was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He cherished the time spent with his family and took pride in watching them grow and succeed.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Peggy Eanes McGuire; his sons, Robbie McGuire and wife, Melinda, and Freddy McGuire and wife, Amy; his granddaughter, Abby McGuire; and a special neighbor and dear friend, Teddy Ratcliffe. He was also very fond of his many nieces and a nephew.
In addition to his parents, Chapman was preceded in death by his brother, Stuart McGuire, and his sister, Jewell Cundiff.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 8:00 PM on Friday, September 11, 2026 at Lotz Funeral Home in Vinton. A funeral service celebrating Chapman's life will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday, September 12, 2026 at Ninevah Church of the Brethren in Hardy, VA with Pastor Christian Becker officiating. A graveside with military honors will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Vinton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Nineveh Church of the Brethren and mailed to PO Box 377, Hardy, VA 24101.
Chapman's life was defined by faith, hard work, generosity, and love for his family and community. While he will be deeply missed, his legacy will live on in the many lives he touched through his kindness, wisdom, and servant's heart. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories that will be cherished forever by those who knew and loved him.
