Robert Charles Helling

Robert Charles Helling, age 72 of Union Hall passed away Wednesday, July 29, 2026 after a courageous battle with brain cancer and heart failure. He was born on November 21, 1953, in Yokohama, Japan, to Curt and Luisita Helling. Robert was the devoted husband of Celeste Vergona Helling, with whom he shared 22 wonderful years of marriage. He is survived by his son, Rob Helling (Rachel); and his beloved granddaughters, Savannah Rae and Saylor Grace. He is also survived by his siblings, Dot Helling (Christian), Curt Helling (Tammy), and Marjorie Brinton (Scott, deceased). In addition, he leaves behind three nieces, Sarah, Erin, and Kimberly; and one nephew, Eric. He was predeceased by his nephew, Craig. Robert spent most of his life in Toms River, New Jersey, where he graduated from Toms River High School North in 1973. Following graduation, he founded his own custom interiors business, which he successfully operated with pride and dedication for 34 years until his retirement in 2008. In retirement, Robert and Celeste relocated to Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia, a place they cherished and were proud to call home. They became active members of The Water’s Edge Country Club, where they enjoyed many of its social offerings. Robert was also a member of B.U.H.B.A.S., a group where he enjoyed weekly breakfasts and camaraderie. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association of America. Robert was deeply involved in his community at Highland Lake, Section 1, in Union Hall, Virginia. In 2019, he was a founding member of the Property Owners’ Association and served for several years as Vice President of the Board of Directors. Through his leadership and dedication, he contributed meaningfully to the growth and improvement of the community. He took great pleasure in spending time on the lake, enhancing his home, assisting neighbors, and hosting gatherings for family and friends. He enjoyed having Wednesday night monthly dinners at restaurants with friends. Robert will be remembered for his warmth, generosity, and the deep love he had for his family and friends. The family extends its sincere gratitude to the neuro-oncology teams at Baptist Health in Jacksonville, Florida, Carilion Clinic Neurology in Roanoke, Virginia, and Blue Ridge Cancer Center for their compassionate care and support. His family will receive friends from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. on Tuesday, August 4, 2026 at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, 665 South Main Street, Rocky Mount, VA 24151.
