Robert Hunter Brown

Robert Hunter Brown, 85, of Danville, formerly of Roanoke and Alexandria, Virginia, died on Tuesday, August 29, 2023 from complications due to diabetes and heart disease. He was born 21 September 1937 in Roanoke to Calloway Brown and Elsie Mae Burford Brown, both deceased.

He worked in Washington, D.C. at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation as an Assistant Inspector General responsible for the audits of the internal operations of the Corporation and its annual financial statements. Through his almost 40 years of federal government service, he was responsible for managing and directing the internal affairs, including personnel, budget, office space, etc. of the FDIC, Office of the Inspector General. While employed at the FDIC, he was a Certified Internal Auditor, Certified Fraud Examiner, Certified Information Systems Auditor, and Certified Government Financial Manager. He was a lifetime member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.

He served in Korea with the United States Army and worked at the U.S. Army Recruiting and Armed Forces Examining and Induction Station in Roanoke prior to moving to Alexandria, Virginia. After retiring from the FDIC, he moved to Danville to assume the ownership of his sister’s bookkeeping and tax practice upon her death. He established a corporation entitled Computer Bookkeeping and Tax Services, Inc. with Ms. Debra Dockery and himself as owners.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews: Alice Rose Slusher of Waukesha, Wisconsin, Clara Ruth Slusher of Madison, Wisconsin, Barbara Ann Slusher of Ames, Iowa, Robert Claude Slusher of Fall River, Wisconsin, Ernest Wayne Sowder of Roanoke, Kenneth Edwin Manuel and wife Tamera of Sedalia, Missouri, Timothy Andrew Manuel and wife Vickie of Missoula, Montana, Daniel Dean Humbert and wife Allison of Troutville, Virginia, Donald Alan Humbert and wife Tracy of Troutville, Virginia, Phyllis Diane Brown White and husband Michael of Monroe, North Carolina, Lois Ann Brown Hefner and husband Jeffrey of Sugar Hill, Georgia; and several great nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by five sisters: Frances Rose Brown Manuel, Shirley Mae Slusher Brown, Mary Elizabeth Brown Sowder, Annie Ruth Brown Humbert, and Margaret Lucille Brown Boggs, and a brother: Irvin Calloway Brown. He was also predeceased by Brothers-in-Law Basil Norvelle Sowder, Daniel Alfred Humbert, and Carroll Ural Manuel, and Sister-in-Law Edith Eleanor McCoury Brown.

His created remains will be interred in Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem, Virginia in the family plot. He requested that tax deductible remembrances which will be used to protect and defend the civil rights of all citizens be mailed to the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation, 125 Broad Street, 18th Floor, New York, New York 10004-2400.

A graveside service with military honors will be held in Sherwood Memorial Park on Saturday, September 9, 2023 at 10:00 am.
