Robert L. Hamby
Robert Lawrence Hamby, 94, of Bassett, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 10, 2023, at the Salem Veterans Hospital. He was born on December 23, 1928, to the late Lawrence Hamby and Mae Pulliam Hamby. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Terry Hamby Kendrick; three brothers, Tom Hamby, Jack Hamby and Ray Hamby; and one sister, Jean Yancey
Robert was a member of Day Star Ministries. He served his nation proudly by serving in the U.S. Army, one of his duty assignments was the Korean Conflict from 1950-1952 as a machine gunner. He loved a lifetime of racing with Kailey Lynch, George Eanes and the #70 car. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time teaching his daughter and grandsons how to survive life, whether it was changing the oil or tire on their cars, to driving the tractor, welding, running chainsaws, and most importantly being with family. He loved all the visits and surprises from his granddaughter, Britney, and he cherished the special times they spent together. He also loved his son-in-law, John, and enjoyed sharing their countless “Google searches” stories.
Robert is survived by his wife of 72 wonderful years, Dorothy “Dot” Mae Hamby; daughter, Lisa Hamby Mathis (John); three grandchildren; Britney Henson (Mike), Robert “Robbie” Whitlow (Tori), and Brandon Kendrick (Liz); five great-grandchildren: Zane and Aubrey Whitlow, Peyton and Parker Henson, and Kaden Pruett; two brothers; Harvey Hamby, and Donald Hamby (Barbara); and a host of nieces, nephews, other family, and friends.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 15, 2023, at 12 Noon at Bassett Funeral Service with Pastor Sam Caldwell officiating. Burial will follow immediately after the service at Henry Memorial Park with military honors. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Pastor Sam Caldwell, and the dedicated hospice doctors and nurses at the Salem VA Hospital for their love and care.
