Robert Leighton Newberry

ROBERT LEIGHTON NEWBERRY, 78, of Bland, VA, passed away Wednesday, January 4, 2024, at Carrington Place-Wytheville. He was born January 26, 1945 in Roanoke, VA, the son of the late Leighton P. Newberry & Mary Patteson Stables.

He was a member of the Church of God A.W.A. He retired from the American Screw Company after 40 plus years of service. He enjoyed farming. He loved his family farm and inviting friends to camp and to enjoy the Blue Hole on Walkers Creek. He was an avid Dodgers fan and NASCAR fan, especially of Dale Earnhardt. 

He was preceded in death by his father & step-mother, Leighton Price & Mary (“Brownie”) Hounshell Newberry, his mother & step-father, Mary Patteson & James O. Stables, his wife, Judy LaVerne Cox Newberry and his brother & sister-in-law, Stephen, Sr. & Patti Newberry.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, April Celena Dutton; his brothers & sisters-in-law, Donald E.& Margaret Strouth and Frank & Kim Newberry; sisters-in-law & brother-in-law, Freida & Randy Irvin and Margie Cox; his grand dogs and his cats; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends. 

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. at A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, with Pastor Larry Lambert officiating. Burial will follow in the Mechanicsburg Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, January 9, 2024 from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M.
