Roland Baxter “R.B.” Parris, 95, of Appomattox passed away on Sunday, November 27, 2022. He was the husband of Louise Nelson Parris.
Born in Asheville, N.C., on August 30, 1927, R. B. was the son of the late Roland Baxter Parris, Sr. and the late Alva Teague Parris. Educated in Asheville Public Schools, R.B. joined the U.S. Marine Corps near the end of World War II. After serving in the Marine Corps. R.B. attended N.C. State University and majored in forestry. He then worked with the U. S. Forest Service in California and Arizona. He started work for Continental Can Company in 1953 as an area forester and continued until his retirement in 1986.
R.B. and Louise were married November 19, 1955. They joined Memorial Methodist Church in Appomattox. He taught Sunday School there for several years. R.B. was a Mason and a member of the Lions Club. He was a devoted husband, father, and Papa Bear.
Survived by his wife and children, Mary P. Goin (Gary), R. Baxter Parris, III (Debbie), Donald N. Parris (Kathy) all of Appomattox, Susan P. Prillaman (Mike) of Forest; ten grandchildren, Sarah Beth G. Waddell (Nick), Kimberly G. Elliott (Will), Donna P. John (Phil), Kathlyn P. Wade (Seth), Seth G. Parris, Ashleigh E. Parris, Roland B. Parris, IV (Elizabeth), Savannah P. Webber (Samuel), Heather P. Loftis (David Ray), and J. Bennett Prillaman; and 11 great-grandchildren, Caleb, Lorelei, Everly and Cora Wade, Easton, Taylor and Lelia John, Kayden, Kruz, and Kali Alzugaray, and Frances Waddell. He is also survived by three brothers-in-law, John M. Nelson (Carolyn), Robert S. Nelson, and Thomas L. Nelson; three nieces, Pamela Goldrick, Sherry Watts (Jeff), and Nancy Quisenberry; and numerous Nelson nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Donald T. Parris; nephews, Jeff Parris and Steve Parris; and a brother and sister-in-law, Ben and Alice Nelson.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, December 2, 2022, in Old Herman Cemetery officiated by Rev. Norman Ramsey.
