Rubye Mitchell Scott

Rubye Mitchell Scott, 98, of McCoy, Virginia, passed from this physical life peacefully at her home on Friday, September 11, 2026. Born August 20, 1928, in the small mining community of Patterson, near Grundy, Virginia, Rubye was the oldest daughter in a family of seven children. She graduated from Grundy High School at age 15 and continued her education at the State Teachers College in Radford. She completed her four-year teaching certificate in three years and began a career devoted to educating and encouraging generations of students. Rubye taught for 37 years, spending most of her career at Blacksburg High School before retiring in 1985. She loved teaching and treasured the many students whose lives became part of her own. Her influence extended well beyond the classroom. Rubye and her husband, Scotty, volunteered together at the hospital for 22 years, and she faithfully served her church through Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. Rubye’s Christian faith was the foundation of her life. She and Scotty were charter members of Community Christian Church in McCoy, where they raised their family and served for many years. She loved Jesus deeply and shared that love through her service, hospitality, and care for others. Family was one of Rubye’s greatest joys. She was known as Aunt Rubye to many, Mamaw to some, and Mom to Patricia and Kim. Her family will remember her as witty, capable, and always seeming to “have it together.” Some of their sweetest memories are simple ones, like sitting together on the back porch swing, stringing beans and singing “Got Any Rivers.” Rubye was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, Leo Caudell “Scotty” Scott, and by her siblings, George Mitchell, Jack Mitchell, Lovis Countiss, Mae Belle Sartain, Joy Taylor, and Everett Mitchell. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Williams and her husband, Dewey; her son, Kim Scott and his wife, Cyndee; her grandchildren, Mitch Scott and his wife, Kelly; Matt Scott and his wife, Lynn; Dustin Williams and his wife, Amber; and Jessica Hoffman and her husband, Aaron. She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren: Reid and Emma Scott; Addy, Olivia, and Hannah Scott; Layla Williams; and Charlie Kate and Henry Hoffman. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Marlene Mitchell and Susan Mitchell. The family would like to thank her wonderful caregivers Amy, Angela, Cyndi, Sequoia, and Valerie for their loving care. Thanks also to Good Samaritan for their support. Visitation will be held Sunday, September 20, 2026, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home in Blacksburg, Virginia. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Scott-Albert Family Cemetery, followed by a reception for family and friends at Community Christian Church in McCoy. In lieu of flowers, Rubye requested that donations be made to Blue Ridge Christian Camp in McCoy, PO Box 428, McCoy, VA 24111 Rubye lived a long life marked by faith, family, service, and love. Her influence will continue through the many people she taught, encouraged, served, and loved.
