Sandra Wooldridge71, of Lynchburg passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2026 leaving behind a legacy of strength, determination, compassion, and unwavering love for her family, friends, and animals.

She was born in Lynchburg, June 16, 1954 to the late Marvin M. Wooldridge and Lillian Vaughan Wooldridge.

A proud graduate of Brookville High School, Class of 1972, Sandra was known during her school years for her athletic spirit and competitive nature. She played basketball and earned the nickname “Bird,” a fitting reflection of her energy and determination. She loved being outdoors, whether it was working in the yard, playing football with the neighborhood boys in the front yard, or simply enjoying the sunshine.

Sandra continued her education at University of Lynchburg, graduating in the mid-1970s before beginning a career of public service that would define much of her life. She was sworn in with the Lynchburg Police Department on October 31, 1977, serving her community with dedication, courage, and compassion. During her time as an officer, she received numerous letters of commendation and appreciation from local departments, the courts, and members of the public whose lives she touched through her kindness and professionalism.

Sandra’s life changed dramatically following a serious accident on April 13, 1979, which ultimately led to her retirement due to injuries on April 18, 1984. True to her resilient spirit, she turned her own challenges into a mission to help others. She became a passionate advocate and source of encouragement for fellow amputees, helping to establish the first Central Virginia Amputee Support Group and offering support to others long before the group was formally organized. Her courage and willingness to help others facing similar struggles made a lasting and meaningful impact on many lives.

She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and was raised in Park View Methodist Church, later attending Timberlake United Methodist Church. Her faith remained an important part of her life.

Sandra loved to travel and enjoy life’s simple pleasures. She was a longtime member of Hill City Pool, where she spent countless summer days whenever she was able. She cherished trips to Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head Island, visits to the family beach home in North Carolina, a special birthday trip to Bermuda, a girls’ trip to Cancún, and many enjoyable cruises.

She was a devoted animal lover who adopted several dogs, cared for many cats, and faithfully supported local animal rescue organizations. Her love for animals reflected the same generous heart she showed to everyone around her.

Sandra was known for always speaking her mind, standing strong in her convictions, and fiercely loving those closest to her. She would help anyone she could and was deeply devoted to her family and friends. Her strength, humor, honesty, and compassion will be remembered by all who knew her.

She is survived by her sister, Shelby W. Wallace, and her husband, Dr. Donald M. Wallace.
