Shirley Katherine Laughlin

December 7, 1942 - August 5, 2026

Shirley Johnson Laughlin, 83, of Goode, VA, was welcomed into her heavenly home by Jesus and all her loved ones awaiting her arrival on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. Her strong spirit, unwavering love for her family, and faith leave behind a legacy that will be cherished for generations.

Born on December 7, 1942, she was the daughter of the late William Orrin Johnson and Almeta Mason Johnson. Shirley was preceded in death by the love of her life and husband, Melvin Edward “Pete” Laughlin, who was truly her world; and by her two brothers, Sherman D. Johnson and Carlton "Midget" Johnson.

A gifted seamstress throughout her life, Shirley worked at the Bedford Dress Factory for a few years. She also worked for Duty Duds for a short time, but sewing was much more than a profession, it was one of her greatest passions. Whether creating beautiful garments or mending something with loving hands, she found joy in every stitch.

Shirley also had a remarkable gift for gardening. Blessed with a true green thumb, she delighted in cultivating vibrant flowers, especially roses, and carefully landscaping around her home. Her flower beds reflected the same beauty, patience, and care that she poured into every aspect of her life.

Above all else, Shirley was devoted to her family. She was a modest woman whose greatest happiness came from caring for those she loved. She was faithful, loyal, dedicated, and deeply committed to her family and friends. Her quiet strength, kind heart, and unwavering love were gifts that blessed everyone that was blessed enough to know her.

Left to cherish her memory are her two children, Vickie Smith and husband, Russell, and Vivian Edward "Pete" “Hoss” Laughlin and girlfriend, Tammy Stoneberger; three grandchildren, Timothy G. Laughlin and girlfriend, Kristie, Terry E. Laughlin and wife, Sarah, and Jeremy D. Bennett and girlfriend, Tiffany; six great-grandchildren, Tylee E. Laughlin and Miranda, Cody Bennett and Tylia, Cameron Bennett, Chase Laughlin, Nevaeh Bennett, and Hailey Laughlin; one great-great-grandchild, Auggie Bennett; and her beloved grand dog, Snowball.

A funeral service celebrating Shirley's life will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, August 10, 2026, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel with Pastor Ray Lyons officiating. Interment will follow at Pisgah Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the chapel.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the many compassionate caregivers who lovingly cared for Shirley throughout her journey. Special thanks are extended to her caregivers while she remained at home, Sharon, Monica, and Tonya. The family also wishes to express sincere appreciation to the entire staff of Bedford County Nursing Home, with special recognition to Nurses Lisa, Emily, Eva, and Angel, Activity Assistants Carolyn and Regina, along with her devoted aides, Christy, Loretta, Nicole, and Sarah. Deep gratitude is also extended to Heartland Hospice of Lynchburg, especially Mary, Olivia, Valerie, Jill, Michelle, and Chaplain John. Your kindness, compassion, and dedication brought comfort not only to Shirley but also to her entire family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692.

Though Shirley's earthly work is complete, the love she gave so freely, the beauty she created with her hands, and the faith she lived each day will continue to bloom in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Her memory will forever remain a treasured blessing.
