Sonia Kay Watkins, known to all who loved her as Sonia, passed away on October 21, 2026, in Pembroke, Virginia, at the age of 48. Born on December 24, 1977, in Roanoke, Virginia, she lived a life marked by love, creativity, and devotion to the people and passions that mattered most to her. Sonia was a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend whose presence brought warmth and comfort to those around her. She is survived by her sons, Cade Watkins and JW Harris, and by her granddaughter, Jazmine Watkins, who brought her great joy. She is also survived by her brothers, Gene Watkins and his wife Susan, Todd Watkins, and Tylee Watkins, as well as her niece, Victoria DeWeese. Sonia was preceded in death by her parents, Donnie Watkins and Sandra Smith Watkins, and by her nephew, Jordan Childress. Family was at the center of Sonia’s life, and she found her greatest happiness in the time she spent with those she loved. She was a devoted mother who cared deeply for her sons and took pride in the family she helped nurture. Her love extended naturally to her granddaughter, who was a treasured part of her life. Sonia’s bond with her brothers and extended family remained an important source of strength and connection throughout her years. Sonia will be remembered for her creative spirit and her gentle appreciation for the simple beauty of life. She enjoyed drawing and music, both of which reflected her thoughtful and expressive nature. She also loved going on walks, where she could enjoy the world around her at a peaceful pace. Animals held a special place in her heart, especially hummingbirds, whose grace and energy she admired. These interests were a reflection of who she was, a woman who noticed beauty in everyday moments and found comfort in the world around her. In lieu of flowers, the family requests tributes be paid in her honor to Kendall Funeral Home to assist in offsetting funeral expenses. There are no services scheduled for her at this time.
