Sonja Christina Lawson

Sonja Christina Lawson, 55, of Stoneville, N.C., died on Monday, February 1, 2023, at UNC Rockingham Hospital, Eden, N.C.

“Tina” was born October 1, 1967, in Martinsville, Va., to James David Witt and the late Alice Johannes. In addition to her mother, Tina was preceded in death by her infant son, Andrew Walton Young, grandparents, James R. and Christine P. Witt, and Uncle David Hale.

Tina was a 1985 graduate of Bassett High School and studied Computer Science at National Business College. She started her work career after high school as an employee of Food Lion. She was later employed by Parkdale Textiles in Eden, N.C. It was there that she met the handsome young Daryl Lawson and captured his heart. Tina later took a job with Proctor and Gamble in Greensboro, N.C., from which she retired when she became disabled. After retirement, Tina spent her life as a devoted wife and Mimi to three cherished grandchildren. She also took great pleasure in time spent with her brothers and sisters and large extended family. When she was able to go, the time she spent at NASCAR races with her dad, Daryl, and many friends brought her great pleasure. Tina’s heart also reached out to many fur babies, and she loved flowers and feeding the hummingbirds. Her faithful and devoted companion for the past seven years has been her loving border collie Abby. Tina loved the Lord and was faithful to spend time in devotion and worship in the online services of Day Star Ministries.

Tina is survived by her loving husband of 18 years, Thomas Daryl Lawson, of the home; son, James Michael Young (Tawney) of Patrick Springs, Va.; dad, James David Witt and step-mom Carol C. Witt of Bassett, Va.; brother, Brian Witt (Melinda) of High Point, N.C.; sister, Sarah L. Witt of London, England; sister Laura Cozart (Marcus) of Bassett, Va.; brother Robert D. Cozart II (Beverly) of Summerville, S.C. ; bonus sister Shannon R. Simmons (Chris) of Stoneville, N.C.; grandsons Tristan Young and Myron Young and granddaughter Trinity Rose Young of Patrick Springs, Va.. She is also survived by her loving aunt, Linda Hale of Bassett, Va.; one niece; three nephews; a great-niece; a great-nephew and a host of friends

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 8, 2023, from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. at Day Star Ministries, 6387 Virginia Ave., Bassett, VA, where a funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Sam Caldwell officiating. A private burial will follow at Roselawn Burial Park, Martinsville, Va.
